BLOCK PLAN

Four - lesson unit plan

The block plan is an outline of a potential progression for the unit.  Depending on the response of students this progresson will be adapted.
 
 
Lesson 1
Lesson 2
Tactical Problem:  Maintaining Possession of the ball

Lesson focus:  Passing & Receiving a Pass, Moving into open space to create passing angle

Skill Objective:  Proper execution of passing in order to create space, make a target, quick & accurate pass, head up, face target, extend with arms.

Introductory task/game:
Bean Bag Toss w/partner
- pass, & move quickly to space

Skill/Concept development tasks/games:
 
2 vs. 2  Keep Away
Skill Practice - pass w/partner.  To eliminate "suicide line pass", work on creating a passing angle

Culminating Game:  "End Ball"/ 4 vs. 3 or 3 vs. 2 games
-work on passing techniques
 
 

 

Tactical Problem: Maintaining possession of the ball with triple threat and creating space by dribbling

Lesson focus: -Dribbling the basketball
3 points to dribbling: Head up, Arm Bar, Waist Height

Skill objective: Creating space, moving up court, maintain possession, creating a passing angle, driving to basket

Introductory task/game:
End Ball
-4 vs. 4 (each team has 1 player in end zone, pass to them to score)

Skill/Concept development tasks/games:
Dribbling w/ partner following/shadowing
-3 points to dribbling
-Dribbling w/ partner "Keep Away" (focus on dribbling, not defense)
-Game: "Elimination"

Culminating Game:  3 vs. 3 or 4 vs. 4 (half-court)
-start with no dribbling, then allow dribbling
 

 

Lesson 3
Lesson 4
Tactical Problem:  Attacking the basket to score

Lesson focus:  Shooting- creating space to shoot, proper execution, & good decision-making

Skill objective: 
Base firm
Elbow under ball
Extend arm
Follow through or flip wrist

Introductory task/game:
-Light jog 
-Game of "End Ball"

Skill/Concept development tasks:
-Shooting demo: "B.E.E.F"
-Shooting against wall w/partner, alternating who shoots
-"End Ball" using specific targets (hoops held up by person in end zone).
-work on shooting technique
Culminating Game:  5 vs. 3 and 4 vs. 2 (half-court)
-shooting on basket with proper technique

Tactical Problem: Defending Basket,  player to player defense

Lesson focus:  Preventing opponent from scoring.

Skill objective: Ready position- low base, arms out, one foot slightly in front of the other, head up, eye on opponent's chest.

Introductory task/game:
 
-Game of  "Guard your Lucky Charms" (bean bag)
-Game of  "Chicken"

Skill/Concept development tasks:
 
-Ready position-demo
-"British BullDog": with defender in middle, player w/ball must try to get to other side
-working on 1 on 1
-working on defense primarily
Culminating Game: 4 vs. 4 (half-court)
-must complete "X" number of passes before shooting
